Pros and Cons of Living in Houston

What are the pros and cons of moving to Houston? 🌆

In this video, I'll go over the pros and cons of living in Houston, TX.

Whether you're contemplating relocation or just curious about life in Houston, we've got you covered.

Pros:

1. Diverse Culture & Food 🌮

One of the standout features of Houston is its incredible diversity. With a population representing all corners of the globe, you'll find diverse cultures and cuisines.

With that comes incredible food choices. Whether you want authentic Vietnamese, Indian, Korean, or of course, Tex-Mex or BBQ, you will find whatever you’re looking for.

We have many nationally recognized chefs in Houston, so you will definitely eat well here.

2. Space

Houston is known for its spacious living. You’ve heard the saying “Everything is bigger in Texas”? We have larger homes than the national average. Homes built in 2010 and beyond have an average of 2,316 square feet. The land is also spacious. Having a large back yard is common here and you get used to having a lot of space.

3. Cost of Living 💰

Another significant advantage is the cost of living. Houston consistently ranks as one of the most affordable major cities in the United States. Housing, groceries, and entertainment are all budget-friendly, making it easier to enjoy your life here.

4. Hospitality 👋

One thing you'll notice when you move to Houston is the genuine Southern hospitality. The people here are known for their friendliness and warmth. People visiting tell me all the time how friendly everyone is here.

Cons

Now, for some of the challenges we face in Houston.

1. Traffic 🚘

First and foremost, Houston is notorious for its traffic congestion. The city's sprawling layout and growing population mean that rush hour is very real. Be prepared for longer commutes and potential delays.

2. Public Transportation is Lacking 🚃

If you're used to efficient public transportation, you might be in for a surprise. Houston's public transit system is not very robust, so owning a car is pretty much a necessity.

3. Have to Travel to Hike 🌲

If you're an outdoor lover, you'll need to be prepared to travel a bit to find hiking and outdoor recreational areas. While Houston has some amazing public parks within the city limits, you’ll need to drive about an hour to go camping or hiking.

4. Hot Summers 🌞

It wouldn't be Houston without mentioning the weather. The summers here can be scorching, with temperatures soaring into the triple digits. I moved from the midwest, and I like to tell people that at least I don’t have to shovel the heat! You just crank up the AC in your car and you’re on your way.

5. Hurricane Season 🌀

Houston is on the Gulf of Mexico, so being prepared for the occasional tropical storm or hurricane is essential. There are plenty of guides on how to prepare for hurricane season and if you’re really concerned about flooding, then I can help you find areas that are less likely to flood.

In summary, Houston has a lot to offer. Just remember, no place is perfect and in my opinion, Houston has many more pros than cons.

Whether Houston is the right place for you depends on your priorities and preferences. So, weigh these pros and cons carefully and consider how they align with your lifestyle and goals.
